Election Notes and Resources

It's that time again...Election Day is just over two weeks away. As usual we will be faced with an array of candidates for many offices as well as choices to be made on state and county proposals. Here's some information and a few resources to help you out:

Voting
  • General Election Voting will be on Tuesday, 2 November, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Redeemer Baptist Church on 18800 E. Iliff Ave (just east of the Walgreens at Tower and Iliff). Don't forget to bring valid identification!
  • Early Voting starts on Monday, 18 October and ends Friday, 29 October. Registered voters can vote early at designated early polling places throughout the area. For residents of the Lake Shore, the closest place is Arapahoe CentrePoint Plaza, 14980 E. Alameda Dr., Aurora. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Hours on Tuesday are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Absentee Ballots can be ordered from the Arapahoe County Clerk's office. You must order your ballot no later than 26 October (if requesting by Mail). After voting, you must return your absentee ballot so that it is in the hands of the Arapahoe County Clerk by 7:00 PM on Election Day, Tuesday 2 November.
  • View The Arapahoe County Election Packet online to see your ballot choices. Because this packet shows choices for the entire county, not all choices will be on your particular ballot. The Lake Shore Community is in in U.S. House of Representatives District 7 of Colorado, Colorado House District 43, Colorado Senate District 28, Arapahoe County District 3.
  • No new voters are being registered; under Colorado law, voter registration closes 29 days before Election day.

Candidates

  • You can access information about all the candidates at www.politics1.com, which has links to many campaign websites if you want to find out more about candidate's positions on the issues of the day. This includes sites for President, Senate, and Congressional candidates as well as candidates for Colorado elective offices.
  • In case you missed the Presidential Debates, you can review transcripts from the debates at the Commission for Presidential Debates Website. If you have Comcast Digital Cable, you can also view the debates using their On-Demand Menu.
  • If you find all the TV ads and rhetoric somewhat confusing, check out www.factcheck.org. This site, maintained by The Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, helps shed some light on the truth and fiction in the statements of the Presidential candidates.

State and Local Issues

There are several important issues to be considered by Colorado voters this election.

  • We have four proposed amendments to the Colorado constitution. Amendment 36 in particular, is getting considerable attention because it may have a direct impact on this year's Presidental election. You should have recently received a "blue book" containing an analysis of these proposed amendments. If you misplaced your copy, you can find it online at www.state.co.us/BallotBook.
  • Analysis of the various Referendums to be decided by Araphaoe County was sent to you by mail from the Arapahoe County Clerk's office

We hope these resources help you make some decisions this Election Day. Whatever your political position or favored candidate, we urge you to get out and vote, encourage others to do the same, help someone who may not be able to get to the polls on their own, and make sure to perform this most fundamental right and responsibility of American citizenship.

Thanks, and we'll see you at the polls on Election Day!

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

We have had several reports of 'damaged property' in the month of September. As a reminder, try to park your vehicle in the garage or at least in the driveway. Also, if you see any graffiti, do not clean it up until you have contacted the police department. More often than not, they have people who will come out and photograph the graffiti. By doing this, they will be able to tell if it's the same people or not. If you have any questions, please contact your Block Captain or Lisa Kelly at 303-337-1989.
